Making it Real for everyone - A Personalised response to Winterbourne View

Added on

A key lesson of the Winterbourne View Inquiry is that service providers and commissioners need to work better together and develop more equal partnerships with people who use services and families.

Making it Real for everyone - a personalised response to Winterbourne View was established to embed this learning and make it a reality. The initiative is a joint project between Winterbourne Joint Improvement Programme and TLAP. Our aim is to work together to develop a model which councils and providers can use to offer personalised care and support for people with behaviour that challenges and learning disabilities. By bringing together organisations in a series of events we are sharing learning on what works.

The first event took place on the 27 February in London. Bill Mumford opened the event, and each of the areas we are working with, Ealing, Milton Keynes and Leeds gave a brief introduction and presentation setting out what they are doing.

Brian Leaning from Ealing and Marianne Selby Boothroyd from Certitude then gave a more detailed presentation about their work. Brian's presentation focused particularly on transition. Ealing has a case co-ordinator to make transition easier. The case co-ordinator acts like a wedding planner to make sure things work. Transition should, after all, be a time for celebration - not fear.

Marianne's presentation focused on providing personalised short breaks. The focus of the presentation was on working together to get to know the person and their family - and the time needed to do this properly. There is no quick fix!

Both presentations had the following key theme, also discussed during the group work:

  • Collaboration
  • Co-production
  • Personalisation

After lunch we launched the Personal Health Budgets Toolkit and there was a presentation by Viv Soave and her sister Donna Corr.

We have gathered feedback (opens new window) on the key themes of the conference along with action points and a summary of the #foreveryone twitter chat from the day.

We'll keep you informed on future dates and bring you updates of lessons shared.
