Launch today of Personal Assistant testing

Before we move on to our other news, here's the latest update from the Department of Health and Social Care on the roll out of testing for PAs. Please share the information amongst your networks.

The testing will: identifiy workers who currently have Covid so they are able to self-isolate; protect from infection people receiving care from workers with a positive result; and prevent and control the spread of the virus by identifying asymptomatic cases.

For more information, you can join the government's webinars.

February blogs

A longer read on how to improve social care in which Chair of TLAP Clenton Farquharson draws on concepts of 'survival of the kindest' and delvering 'key human indicators' over key performance indicators.

As Sian Lockwood announces her retirement from Community Catalysts, she reflects on what she’s learnt in her 11 years of working in social care and her hopes for the future.

If there was one piece of practical action Integrated Care Systems (ICS) could take to make collaborative working a reality, TLAP and NCAG would say it’s ‘co-production’. Jennifer Pearl gives a first hand account from the hospital she attends.

'There's young man living in the community. He has ambition and humour. He also has autism and epilepsy. Sam can say with confidence: "I have a place I can call home and I can live the life I want." It’s an enviable position. The young man's name is Sam Ward. This is his story.' Read it and be inspired.

The proposals in the White Paper build on the NHS Long Term Plan and include plans to make integrated care the “default”, reduce legal bureaucracy and better support social care. Read the comments from tlap partners and stakeholders in Homecare Insight.  Here is the Department of health & Social Care press release

Adult social care in Scotland

The principal aim of the independent review is to recommend improvements to adult social care in Scotland. TLAP read it with interest. Take a look.

Reports

Where does the leadership in social care lie? How effective is it?  Read The King’s Fund's latest report.

TLAP welcomed the findings, and particulalry the emphasis on local leadership: 'Some of the most inspirational leadership comes from care staff themselves, and from adults of working age who have been empowered by personal budgets and direct payments to shape their own, and others’, lives.'

Many charities are looking first for what people can achieve with the right kinds of connections and allies, not just concentrating on needs and problems.  Shared Lives Plus CEO Alex Fox's report offers a guide to the steps charities can take on their journey to be more asset-based.

Synthesised findings from four reports suggest care Act implementation was hampered by lack of clarity in legislation, complexity of local care systems, weak collaboration and insufficient capacity/funding. Read the paper commissioned by National Institute for Health Research (NIHR).
