Think Local Act Personal

Hi,

At our last partners meeting, colleagues and those with lived experience discussed proposals for the social care green paper and its parallel programme for working age adults.

We’ll be taking these forward in discussions with the Department of Health & Social Care. All of them are rooted in TLAP’s experience of good person-centred care. They are:

  • co-production, particulary as a model to inform both programmes
  • innovation: the world has changed and so must our approach to supporting people
  • communities: they are a critical part of the health and social care solution
  • funding: it has to be long term, sustainable and sensible.
(A longer viersion of this message appeared in an update from TLAP Head Caroline Speirs to the 52 partners)

Over the coming weeks and months TLAP will provide examples in our e-newsletter and network meetings of these appoaches, which we believe ought to be writ large in both programmes.

How-to Guides for creating an asset-based area

TLAP is offering practical support on how system change can happen, at scale, by shifting to an asset based approach.  Here we present the first in a series of ‘how to‘ guides  from Clive Miller, consultant and author, and Alex Fox, Chief Executive of Shared Lives Plus, who argue that it is this approach that will support whole system reform.

Engaging and empowering communities

TLAP is gathering examples of organisations working to create strong and inclusive communities. We will report back on progress made since 2015 when we launched Engaging & empowering communities: Our shared commitment and call to action and consider what further action is needed.

Directory of innovations in social care

Six innovations was published last year and TLAP will be publishing other examples of care and support innovations as we continue to gather them throughout the year. Please support this work by emailing your examples to Caroline.Speirs@tlap.org.uk  for inclusion in an online directory.

Pooling direct payments – call for examples

TLAP are looking for recent examples in social care of people with care and support needs coming together to use their direct payments collectively. We want to hear from people with experience of purchasing activities, services or materials together with others that have supported wellbeing and independence. Please email Adam.Webb@tlap.org.uk if you can help.

Keyring: Assistive technology

A pilot of 30 adults with a learning disability in Newcastle will have state of the  art technology installed in their homes. A touchscreen computer will be personalised to each individual. It will remind people to take medication, allow them to plan their days and can be monitored by family and carers. The aim is to help this group to become less socially isolated and to involve them in the wider KeyRing networks already present in Newcastle.

Skills for Care: National recruitment campaign survey – deadline 1st Feb

The adult social care sector in England faces challenges to recruit enough staff with the right values. One of the proposed solutions is to run a national recruitment campaign, to raise awareness of adult social care careers, break down some of the negative stereotypes and inspire people with the right values to work in our sector. Skills for Care are running a survey to gather your views.

Gig Buddies on the BBC

Gig Buddies is another great example of a social care innovation and we're delighted that it recently featured on the BBC. For those who aren't familiar it is a volunteer befriending project that matches up socially isolated people with learning disabilities and/or autism with a volunteer who shares the same musical and cultural interests.
