Supported decision making – taking a co-production approach in Hull

Added on

Inclusion North are undertaking a number of projects looking at improving the way in which supported decision making takes place for people with a learning disability.

In Hull Inclusion North have formed a project group made up of representatives from the adult social care (both managers and front line practitioners), from Danny’s Dream (a service provider) and a parent carer. The project group will start off looking at the current way communication is included in the assessment and care planning process for any individual.

They aim to improve the information that is included so that when individuals go into services or are supported by personal assistants information on communication will inform the way that the individual can be supported to make decisions. This should bring practice in line with the Mental Capacity Act and most importantly give people with a learning disability a greater say in their lives.  The work will be co-produced throughout.

Inclusion North would be interested to hear from other areas of the country who can tell us about good practice in terms of supported decision making for people with a learning disability. Please contact:  Lucy at Inclusion North lucyvirgo@inclusionnorth.org.
