This SCIE briefing examines the implications of the personalisation agenda for carers and the two main elements, primarily that personalisation should:impact on the support provided to the person being cared for, which may help you both; affect the support provided for carers, after a carer's assessment.

Putting People First and the Carers Strategy have both recognised the importance of respecting carers as expert partners with a need to be able to access the integrated and personalised services which will help support them in their caring role. Dignity in care homes: Caring for people affected by dementia - a report on a series of events held for care home staff to support national dignity action day in the South East has been published.

In 2009 the Department of Health invited proposals for national Carers' Demonstrator sites to support implementation of the national Carers Strategy. In the context of recognising that supporting carers is everybody's business, projects were sought that would undertake work on the following:more effective (and cost-effective) ways of delivering breaks to carers health and well-being checks for carers better ways for the NHS to support carers Three sites were selected from the East Midlands.

Over three months we piloted the first ever national Carers' Information and Support Programme for carers of people with dementia prior to rolling it out nationally. At three locations, trained facilitators delivered four pilot modules designed in conjunction with carers, providing them with quality information about dementia, practical advice on day to day caring, and signposting carers to local services and financial benefits.

Organisation: Home-Start WestminsterTo reach out to family members who have taken on a caring role, Home-Start Westminster has developed a framework for training and supervising volunteers to support carers in families with young children for two hours a week, in their homes or within the local community. Volunteers have provided significant emotional support as well as linking carers in families up with services, information and practical advice on how they can best manage their caring role while ensuring their own well-being.

The British Lung Foundation (BLF) is the only UK-wide charity solely dedicated to working for everyone affected by any lung disease. Established in 1984 by a group of leading respiratory physicians, the charity works towards positive change in lung health.
