  • Cost effective implementation of Direct Payments - CSED study

    This study, commissioned by the Care Services Efficiency Delivery programme at the Department of Health, demonstrates that a properly implemented Direct Payments payment process should be, at least, cost neutral and potentially beneficial in terms of cost.

    Assessment and care management services are often associated with high staffing costs. Duplication, complex processes, over servicing and unnecessary bearocracy can contribute to significant waste.

    Councils across the East Midlands have been working with CSED consultants to redesign or introuduce reablement services. Councils might typically expect to save in execess of £1million per annum as service users are helped to regain independence and are less reliant on help and support.

    The 9 local authorities are continuing to work with CSED to deliver efficiencies throughout the East Midlands. The work will focus primarily on reablement services and will develop further the initiatives that were delivered in phase 1 of the efficiencies project, with projected savings of approximately £17m.
